Creating a permanent barrier from home-invading insects
We take the approach that most insects that cause a homeowner distress originate from the outside of the home; therefore, our household pest control concentrates more on exterior applications.
By addressing the source of insects, we can limit interior applications to an as-needed basis.
Our customers prefer the idea that chemical applications inside their homes are not done just as a matter of routine.
They also prefer the convenience of exterior treatments and appreciate not having their schedules interrupted.
Our bi-monthly exterior service is fully guaranteed, and in the event we do have to make an interior application, there is no additional charge.
We are experienced in the elimination of all common household pests, including ants, roaches, ticks, fleas, spiders and bed bugs.
We offer targeted treatment to control problem insects.
While ants are an ongoing nuisance in Florida, most ant problems can be controlled by routine exterior spraying. Once ants enter the home they can usually be eliminated by simple baiting and/or spray application; however homes subject to deeply embedded ant colonies may require more aggressive treatment to locate and eradicate nests. Common home-invading ants in Florida include ghost ants, thief ants and carpenter ants, along with non-native species such as Argentine ants, Caribbean crazy ants, tawny crazy ants, big-headed ants and white-footed ants. Frequently we get calls about invasions of tiny ants attracted to food and sweets, commonly referred to as “sugar ants.” These, in fact, are ghost ants, thief ants, Argentine ants or crazy ants. We know the habits of each ant species and are experienced at their elimination. We will conduct a thorough inspection of your residence to identify the intruders, assess if there is nesting within the home, and then determine the least-invasive means to eliminate them.
There are two types or cockroaches that enter homes in Florida: the American cockroach (often referred to as a “Palmetto Bug”), and the German cockroach, which is much smaller in size and tends to colonize deeply in the home. While American roaches tend to live outdoors, they can be introduced through doors, windows and even empty drains. German roaches are known hitchhikers and are often introduced through shipping deliveries, packages, and grocery products. They are also known to travel to and from adjoining multi-family properties; however, they do not live naturally in the wild. American roaches often respond to granular applications, where German cockroaches tend to populate and reproduce quickly and require much more aggressive treatment, along with residual applications.
Ticks & Fleas
In addition to the usual home-invaders, Patrick Exterminating specializes in ridding your home of insects that are given a free ride into your home by your pets. Everyone who has ever had a pet in Florida knows that ticks and fleas are present in abundance. Due to Florida’s often erratic weather patterns, ticks and fleas and can overwhelm your pet and home suddenly and with no notice. Once an infestation occurs, elimination can be an involved process, requiring both interior and exterior treatment of the home and treatment of the animals. The most important thing you can do as a pet owner is to inspect your pet regularly and try to detect the problem early. In the case of an infestation, we offer a safe and comprehensive treatment to rid your home of these persistent parasites. And with regular exterior treatment, including lawn and property spraying, we can help prevent future infestations and bring peace of mind to you and your four-legged family members.
This latest pest to take the stage is not new at all. Bed bugs have been bothering people since ancient times. It seems that only in the past decade have they re-emerged as a public health threat. This is especially prevalent in South Florida with tourist activity from around the country and overseas, along with close proximity to so many theme parks. Bed bug elimination takes a strong commitment from both the homeowner and the pest control technician, especially in condominiums and town-homes where you can become a victim of a neighboring infestation. Whenever you travel, it’s important to minimize what you take into a hotel room and carefully inspect your belongings when you leave. If you believe you are a victim of a bed bug infestation, call us at 772-286-6812 so we can make a positive identification and help formulate a plan for eradication. Patrick Exterminating has a successful track record with these persistent pests and is ready to assist you in their successful extermination. This is not the “travel bug” you want to have!
While spiders might not be pleasant to encounter, most species are harmless and actually feed on more invasive insects, such as ants and roaches. Poisonous species are not common in our area and are rarely found inside the home. The most common poisonous spiders found in South Florida are the black and brown widow; however their numbers have dropped significantly in recent years. The highly feared brown recluse spider is non-native and rarely occurs in Florida. Regardless, most homeowners don’t see spiders as welcome house guests. If spiders are found in or around your home, we eliminate them and our routine exterior treatment is highly successful at keeping them away.
Hornets & Wasps
When we perform our routine exterior treatments, we keep an eye out for hornet and wasp nests and, if found, will eliminate them with a long-range insecticide. We recommend that homeowners routinely inspect the exterior of their home – along with fences, grills and patio furniture – for nesting wasps, and let us know if a nest is sighted. Nests can be established in just a few days. Unlike paper wasps, mud-dauber wasps are not usually dangerous. Mud dauber nests can easily be knocked down by the homeowner; however, if not removed, these structures can become inhabited by more dangerous wasp species.
While honeybees are considered to be the most beneficial of all insect species and honey bee colonies have great economic and environmental value, it is important to know that Africanized honey bees (AHBs) have made their way into the state of Florida. AHBs breed and compete with the European strains of honey bees that normally inhabit our state. While many people classify them as aggressive, their behavior is actually defensive. They react to human invasion of their environment and defend themselves when necessary. Attacks occur when people get too close to a nesting colony. If you find bees nesting on your property, take care not to disturb them. Call us immediately at 772-286-6812 and we will coordinate their removal with a reputable bee specialist.
Non-Chemical Tips to Keeping Your Home Free from Pests
- Keep all trees, bushes and shrubs trimmed back away from home.
- When planting trees and bushes, calculate the mature size and position planting so half of mature plant is well away from roof drip edge.
- Keep mulch shallow in plant beds around home and do not add new mulch without removing the original layer. Decaying mulch is the number one insect harborage around your home.
- Divert water away from home; keep air conditioning overflow and sprinkler pattern at least 12 inches away from home.
- Keep interior drain pipes filled with water. For our snowbird friends, this is especially important for you. Dry drain pipes lead to American roach infestations and create a conduit for rodent entry.
We target all unwanted household intruders, including ant, roach, flea, tick, termite, bed bug, rat, mice, hornet and wasp, and coordinate bee removal. Our lawn pest and disease control services target the leading Florida yard invaders in St. Augustine grass, such as southern chinch bug, sod webworm and armyworm and fire ant, as well as common lawn fungus, including brown patch, leaf lesions and take-all root rot.
